Description

Saxenda® (liraglutide) is used to lose weight in obese or overweight adults who also suffer from weight-related medical problems, and it helps to keep weight off once the weight has been lost. A child aged 12 to 17 years who is overweight and whose body weight exceeds 132 pounds (60 kilograms) can use Saxenda®. Exercise and a healthy diet are recommended along with Saxenda®.

As part of its mechanism of action, Saxenda mimics the actions of the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that our bodies naturally produce. Saxenda increases the level of GLP-1 in the body, which can help to reduce hunger and promote weight loss by regulating appetite and food intake.

An injection of Saxenda® is administered once a day under the skin (subcutaneously) using a multi-dose injection pen.

Victoza and Saxenda® contain the same active ingredient (liraglutide). Unlike Victoza, Saxenda® has a different strength and is FDA-approved for a different condition than Victoza.

Type 1 or type 2 diabetes cannot be treated with Saxenda®. Children under 12 years of age are not known to be safe or effective when taking Saxenda®. Saxenda’s safety and effectiveness in type 2 diabetic children aged 12 to 17 is unknown.

Ozempic® contains semaglutide, while Saxenda® contains liraglutide. Weight loss and weight management are the goals of both medications.

Under the skin, Saxenda® and Ozempic® are injected. Ozempic® is taken once a week, whereas Saxenda® is taken once a day.

Saxenda® does not contain any specific warnings about drinking alcohol. It is important to keep in mind that alcohol can lower blood sugar levels. Alcohol increases your risk of hypoglycemia if you are taking other diabetes medications. Additionally, many alcoholic drinks are high in carbohydrates and sugar. Avoid alcohol if you’re trying to lose weight.

After injection, Saxenda® reaches its maximum concentration in the body 11 hours later. To determine whether Saxenda® is working, you should follow up with your doctor after 2 to 8 weeks.

  • After 16 weeks, your doctor may tell you to stop taking it if you have not lost 4% of your body weight.

  • Saxenda may be stopped in children 12 and older after 12 weeks on the maintenance dose if BMI has not decreased by 1%.

Saxenda® was found to be more effective than a placebo (a sugar pill) in clinical studies. It is important to note, however, that individual results may vary, and weight loss may not be sustained without dietary and exercise changes.

Side Effects

There may be mild or serious side effects associated with Saxenda®, as with most drugs. Saxenda® may cause a number of side effects, including those listed below. There are other side effects associated with the use of Saxenda® for weight loss that are not included in these lists.

In order to determine whether a drug will have side effects, keep in mind the following factors:

  • Age

  • Your other health conditions

  • Medications you take

Saxenda® may cause side effects, which your doctor or one of our pharmacists can explain to you. Additionally, they can suggest ways to reduce side effects.

You may experience nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, diarrhea, gas, heartburn, or constipation. Liraglutide usually reduces nausea as you continue to use it. Do not hesitate to tell your doctor or pharmacist if any of these effects persist or worsen.

This medication has been prescribed by your doctor because he or she believes the benefit to you outweighs the risk of side effects. There are few serious side effects associated with this medication.

It is possible to become dehydrated if vomiting or diarrhea don’t stop. Any symptoms of dehydration, such as unusual dry mouth, thirst, or dizziness/lightheadedness, should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible.

Symptoms of kidney problems (such as a change in urine volume), yellowing eyes/skin, fast heartbeat, mental/mood changes (such as depression, thoughts of suicide), signs of low blood sugar (sudden sweating, shaking, fast heartbeat, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, or tingling hands/feet) should be reported to your doctor immediately.).

In case of severe side effects, get medical attention right away, including: signs of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease (such as persistent nausea and vomiting, severe stomach/absent pain).

It is rare for this drug to cause a very serious allergic reaction. Despite this, you should seek medical attention right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, difficulty breathing.

The following is not a complete list of possible side effects. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you notice other effects not listed above.

For medical advice about side effects in the US, contact your doctor. For more information, call 1-800-FDA-1088 or visit www.fda.gov/medwatch.

Usage

The usual dosage of Saxenda® is once a day. Your prescription label will provide instructions on how to follow them. There may be times when your doctor changes your dose. Use this medicine as directed and do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration.

Please read all patient information, medication guides, and instructions provided in the box. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

With or without a meal, Saxenda® can be injected under the skin at any time of the day. A demonstration of how injections should be used at home will be provided to you. Self-injecting this medicine is not recommended if you do not understand how to give the injection and how to properly dispose of used needles and syringes.

Saxenda® should be injected in the best places on your body by your healthcare provider. Every time you give an injection, use a different place. Injecting into the same place twice is not recommended.

You should also be aware of signs of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), including increased thirst or urination, blurred vision, headaches, and fatigue.

In addition to stress and illness, surgery, exercise, alcohol use, and skipping meals, blood sugar levels can be affected by a number of factors. Before changing your medication schedule or dose, consult your doctor.

A complete treatment program may also include diet, exercise, weight control, regular blood sugar testing, and special medical care in addition to Saxenda®. Make sure you follow your doctor’s instructions closely.

Dosage

If necessary, dose escalation may be delayed by 1 additional week to reduce the likelihood of gastrointestinal symptoms:

Week 1: Inject 0.6 mg subcutaneously once a day

Week 2: Inject 1.2 mg subcutaneously once a day

Week 3: Inject 1.8 mg subcutaneously once a day

Week 4: Inject 2.4 mg subcutaneously once a day

Week 5: Inject 3 mg subcutaneously once a day

A maintenance dose of 3 mg subcutaneously once a day is recommended. If maintenance doses are not tolerated, discontinuation is recommended; there is no evidence that lower doses are effective for chronic weight management.

Overdose

Liraglutide has been associated with overdoses in clinical trials and post-marketing use. A severe hypoglycemia, severe nausea, and severe vomiting have all been reported as side effects. If you suspect overdosage, you should seek immediate medical attention and, if necessary, visit the nearest hospital.

Disposing

After your injection is complete, carefully remove the needle from the pen. To avoid needlesticks, do not put the needle cap back on the needle. Immediately place the needle in a sharps container to reduce the risk of needlesticks. Put the pen cap back on your pen after each use to protect Saxenda from light.

Do not throw away used needles in household trash or recycling bins.
